Flood gates had to be installed. Big flood here in 1937 and then a levee was installed on 3 sides in 1940. Flood level for us is 40' but with the levee we have never reached a point where we had to install these gates. It was the first time for us. On Monday the river kept rising and the gates were put in place. But after the levee at Bird's Point was blown to mainly alleviate major flooding in Cairo, it dropped our level 1 foot and that was a huge relief.
Barges on the Ohio were ordered to stop. They are not to move, so they have been sitting there for some time. The top photo is one that stopped outside the home of my cousin. They have become great friends with the pilot and crew.
The above photos are of the area that I walk with my sister. The very top one of this group was taken a little earlier and you can see that the stairs are still clear, but the photo on the very bottom shows how it looks this morning. The middle photo is a pedestrian bridge to our marina. When we walk on a normal river level and look down the river appears to be far, far away. Not this morning.
The river is cresting at a level much lower than predicted and will start back down. We are particularly fortunate inside the town as many outside the levee have had to deal with some major flooding.
When the water comes down from above and won't stop and the rivers are back to back they have nowhere to go but right at us....
The above photo is how the river is supposed to look!! And will again...

Very dramatic photos! In spite of the long cold winters Maine never really gets bad floods except for a few low lying areas, no tornados or earthquakes to speak of. Counting my blessings. Hope you're okay.
